What I do
Copy editing
- correct errors of grammar, punctuation, and spelling
- check that sentence structure, word usage, general information (facts, calculations, URLs, etc.), and visual material are accurate and complete
- point out any elements that are missing, problematic, or unclear, and offer suggestions
- develop (or follow) a style sheet for consistency
Stylistic (line) editing
- refine language choices for consistent tone, flow, and effect
- improve clarity while maintaining the writer's voice and intended meaning
- ensure that sentence and paragraph construction are clear and effective for readability and coherence
- combine (if requested) a copy/stylistic edit, also known as line editing or a "copy edit plus"
Structural editing
- assess how effectively the material's content is presented by looking at the "bigger picture," also known as a substantive edit when combined with stylistic editing
- examine the manuscript's overall coherence and logical progression (flow) in relation to its intended audience and purpose
- optimize the shape of the content's organization at this initial stage of the editing process
- identify what needs to be deleted or added so that all the various elements included in the material are effectively balanced
Proofreading
- scrutinize the textual and visual elements of the final layout copy for errors before the material goes to print
- make sure typographical and formatting errors are corrected and all the material adheres to the editorial style sheet
- catch any inconsistencies that would affect the final print

About AI: I will not use the assistance of AI training models to edit your work, in the sense of uploading your content to various kinds of GPTs to perform the edit.
I will edit selective types of AI-generated scripts and apply—as always—responsable judgment to check for AI hallucinations, unintentional bias, and harmful phrasing versus conscious language use.
I'm also fluent in French and Spanish and will copy edit or proofread your English translations from these languages so that they accurately represent the original text or manuscript.
